Alexander Zverev blows Hurkacz away to land semi final spot

All Alexander Zverev needed was a win over his opponent to secure his place in the semis of the ATP Finals and he did it with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 scoreline.

Third-ranked Zverev meant business as soon as he stepped foot on court against Hubert Hurkacz, taking the opening four games. The Pole was unable to deal with the accuracy and power of his 6’6″ opponent who wrapped up victory in just over an hour.

‘Today was a tough match mentally because I needed to win, so I was 100 per cent focused,” said the 2018 champion. ‘I am happy to be through and win in straight sets. You can always improve. The margins are always very small between the top players, but to win you have to do the details right.’

Zverev finishes second in Red Group, behind Daniil Medvedev, which means the German is guaranteed to play Novak Djokovic in one of Saturday’s semi finals. The Serb topped the Green Group and plays a dead rubber against second alternate Cameron Norrie next.

‘I have played Novak in every single big hard-court tournament this year,’ said Zverev, who beat Djokovic in the Tokyo Olympics but lost to him in the US Open semi final. ‘We are making a habit of playing in the later rounds at big tournaments. It is going to be an entertaining one I think.’

Djokovic has won six of their last seven encounters so the odds are very much on the World Number One to progress to the final. However, Zverev has the weapons to cause an upset, especially in a BO3 match, so it remains a mouthwatering and much-anticipated event.
