Alexander Zverev hoping to give Carlos Alcaraz ‘trouble’ in Madrid final

Alexander Zverev has reached the Madrid Open final with a Masters revenge against his rival Stefanos Tsitsipas in a three set semi-final win.

The pair last met at the same stage in the Monte Carlo Masters last month with Stefanos Tsitipas going through to lift the title.

Zverev got this revenge this time though in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win and he will now aim to complete his Madrid title defence against Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz.

The world number three had a successful 2021, winning six titles including two Masters and the ATP Finals but has had a relatively slow start to 2022 only reaching one final in Montpellier.

He has admitted to not being ‘happy’ with his tennis in general and says he only started playing well in his quarter-final straight set win over Felix Auger-Aliassime.

“I thought from yesterday onwards I started to play really well,” said Zverev,

“I’m just extremely happy to be in the final here. I know it’s going to be an extremely tough match tomorrow but I hope I can manage to play my best and give myself a chance.”

Zverev beat Matteo Berrettini in last years Madrid Open final and is hoping to play as well at the Manolo Santana Stadium as he did when his lifted the title.

When asked if his record in Madrid makes it feel like his court, Zverev joked that he had just been borrowing it from his final opponent, home grown star Carlos Alcaraz.

“Yes, I have been playing well, so I’m just renting it,” Zverev said with a laugh.

“It’s going to be his (Alcaraz) court for the next 15 years probably. It has been Rafa’s court for the past 15 years and it’s going to be his court for the next 15 years.

“I just hope I can give him some trouble and I hope I can manage to win tomorrow.”

Alcaraz has has an incredible run seeing off both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on his way to the final.
