Andy Murray has confirmed that he will not be able to play the Australian Open, and it has left him 'devastated.'
Murray had hoped to start 2021 strongly as he made a big push to regain his position as one of the top tennis players in the world following a nightmare time with injury.
However, just as he was preparing to travel to Australia, he returned a positive coronavirus test result, leaving him in a race against time to get Down Under in enough time to complete a mandatory 14-quarantine period.
And, after initially being hopeful of being able to make it work, he has now revealed they have been unable to find a 'workable' solution and he must now miss out.
“Gutted to share that I won’t be flying out to Australia to compete at the Australian Open,” Andy Murray said.
“We’ve been in constant dialogue with Tennis Australia to try and find a solution which would allow some form of workable quarantine, but we couldn’t make it work.
“I want to thank everyone there for their efforts, I’m devastated not to be playing out in Australia – It’s a country and tournament that I love.”
