‘I was happy with the control I had,’ says Ashleigh Barty after another strong showing

Ashleigh Barty said she was very happy with her level of control after she eased herself into the Australian Open fourth round.

World number one Barty easily beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-4 on John Cain Arena, and she looked a different level to her opponent throughout.

And, after the match she said she was happy with yet another impressive performance.

“Sometimes I overuse the slice, but it was something I wanted to implement a lot tonight, to change the tempo of the match,” Barty said.

“I was happy with the control I had. I’ve never played with her before, never hit with her before.

“Her start was pretty good but I was really happy with the run I was able to get on, and obviously a good last few games there.

Barty also said she didn’t necessarily miss the fans on the first day without fans in Melbourne due to the circuit-breaker coronavirus lockdown.

“I love the sound that the ball makes,” Barty said. “It feels a bit like practice so obviously we’re used to it.

Barty will face Shelby Rodgers next after the American scored a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over Estonian Anett Kontaveit.
