ATP join WTA in stating their support for COVID vaccination programme in tennis

The ATP have joined the WTA in saying they will be fully recommending all their players receive a COVID vaccination.

After a year of restrictions and tournament cancellations, tennis appears to be relatively close to emerging from the upheaval caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Wimbledon this year could even be played in front of full, or near-full, crowds just a year after having to be cancelled altogether, and that is due to the success of the British vaccination rollout.

Many players have expressed a distrust of the vaccines, though, believing they have been developed too quickly to be sure if they are actually safe.

Those concerns are easy to understand, but the ATP have said they will be actively reassuring their players in the hope they put themselves forward to be vaccinated at the proper time.

“ATP recommends COVID vaccination based on scientific evidence supporting the health benefits and protection provided,” an ATP spokesman told Simon Cambers.

“In parallel, we remain in support of distribution tiers set forth around the world that prioritise those who need the vaccine most for protection.

“We are working with consultants in infectious disease and virology to evaluate vaccination strategies and to prepare for when vaccines are made widely available to our player group.

“In addition, ATP Medical Services Team is working alongside other International Sports Leagues and external consultants to develop best practices that work for tennis as a global sport.

“Any updates and next steps concerning vaccination options for players and other credentialed individuals will be communicated in due course.”
