Benoit Paire: 'It is better to lose in the first round - I make easier money'

Benoit Paire at Mexico Open

Benoit Paire has continued his recent meltdown by saying he is happy to go out of tournaments in the first round as all he wants is the money.

The Frenchman has cut a controversial figure of late as he spat on the court before tanking at the Argentinian Open earlier this month.

He was a first round casualty once again in Mexico, where he lost to top-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

However, if you thought he would be disappointed in that, you should probably think again.

“I lost in the first round, it’s better, I will be able to get out of the bubble quickly and enjoy a few days before Miami,” Benoit Paire said after the match in Acapulco.

“Tennis is not my priority for the moment. Getting out of the bubble is the only goal I have at every tournament.

“I come (to tournaments), I make some money, then I go to the next tournament: I do my job,” he added.

“If you win an ATP 250, you only get $30,000. I took a check of $10,000 each time by directly losing [in the first round.]

"Why tear yourself away like a crazy person to earn just a little more?”
