Diego Schwartzman has expressed his sadness at the injury nightmare that continues to plague compatriot Juan Martin del Potro.

Del Potro has not played for over a year now due to a recurrence of a fractured kneecap at Queens in 2019.

He has already had two surgeries on the injury and there is currently no date pencilled in for a comeback.

And Schwartzman, who has taken the mantel of the top Argentinian player, says he feels for del Potro.

"He [Del Potro] is always sending me messages when when I’m doing well,” Schwartzman told Tennis Majors.

“We have a good relationship. We are friends from the tour. It’s sad that he has a lot of injuries. When I started to play better we didn’t share a lot of good tournaments.

Despite del Potro's support, Schwartzman says there are two other people who have given him even greater backing during his career.

"The guys who really, really helped me my career, are [Mariano] Zabaleta and [Juan] Monaco, they are like my big brothers.

"When I when I was 15, they started helping me, we did a lot of pre-seasons, practice, advice from them to me. So these two guys helped me a lot in my career”.

Meanwhile, del Potro's former coach has expressed serious doubts about whether he will return to tennis at all.
