Dominic Thiem back to winning ways

Dominic Thiem has finally returned back to winning ways at ATP level after he came from behind to beat Emil Ruusuvuori in Bastad.

The Austrian snapped a ten-match losing streak in Salzburg last week, although he was beaten in the next round.

Now, though, he has taken another major step forward on his return from a serious wrist injury by claiming a first win on the ATP Tour in 14 months.

He lost the first set to the impressive Finn before battling back to claim a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 win, and he admits it has been a long time coming.

“It’s a long time,” Thiem said on court afterwards. “My last victory was in Rome in 2021, it feels like a different world somehow.

"Many, many things happened. It was tough, but it was also a very good experience, I think, for life in general. I’m so happy that I got this first victory here today.

“It was a very difficult match. I didn’t have a very good start and then I fought really well, but I had a really tough period with many losses and not many wins, so it was really difficult for me to close out the match.

Dominic Thiem will get a major test in the next round as he faces Roberto Bautista Agut.

Agut, the fourth seed, received a bye into the second round along with Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud and Diego Schwartzman.

It's a strong field for the Sweden event, with Pablo Carreno Busta, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Aslan Karatsev and Hugo Gaston all advancing into round two as well.
