Dominic Thiem has 'Rafael Nadal-style intensity' now, claims Gael Monfils

Dominic Thiem super happy

Dominic Thiem is able to match the physical intensity of Rafael Nadal according to Gael Monfils, who thinks there is more to come from the Austrian.

Thiem has had a very successful season, finishing the year with a career-high world ranking of three as well as winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

He also reached the Australian Open final back in January and was runner-up at the ATP Finals for a second successive season.

And, according to Monfils, the reason for that breakthrough is a Rafael Nadal levels of physicality.

“What is strong about him is the intensity he manages to put on each ball and on each point, the physical intensity he imposes on his opponents is impressive”, Monfils said.

“It's very hard to master when you are in front and its physical intense; it's impressive, it's Nadal's style."

The challenge for Thiem in 2021 will be to prove this year wasn't a one-off, but Monfils has no concerns about that.

“He made the final at the Australian Open, he won the US Open, at Roland he has already made two finals, so obviously, I can see him confirming next year."
