‘Federer, Nadal and Djokovic wouldn’t be able to live without tennis,’ says Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios says he definitely doesn’t love tennis as much as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, and says he has other things to focus on.

Kyrgios is one of the biggest personalities on the ATP Tour, with his undoubtable raw talent often eclipsed by his controversial outbursts both on and off court.

After choosing to withdraw from tennis during the coronavirus pandemic, Kyrgios has only played two tournaments in the last 15 months, both in his home country Australia.

He did, however, made an exception for Wimbledon and despite little match practice, the 26-year-old made a winning start, winning his first two matches to reach the third round where he unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

Kyrgios has admitted that his motivation for the sport isn’t always as high as it could be and he just isn’t as committed as the big three of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

“I definitely don’t love this sport as those legends do,” said Kyrgios.

“I feel like Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, wouldn’t be able to live without tennis. I feel like that’s their first love. For me my first love was basketball and I wasn’t able to chase that dream.

“I definitely don’t wake up every day wanting to get better or looking to improve. It doesn’t come as easily to me.”

Despite previous public criticism of Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios said this week that the Serbian, along with Federer and Nadal are legends of the sport and praised their individual achievements.

However, the Australian also says that he has other plans outside of tennis and his focus is different to theirs.

“There’s a lot I want to do outside of tennis. And I’m not saying Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer are wrong for putting so much into it. As I said, I’ve praised them enough.”
