Grigor Dimitrov not ready to abandon hopes of winning a major, saying: 'I still believe'

Grigor Dimitrov, who has never reached a Grand Slam final, says he still 'believes' he can win one. Respect.

Grigor Dimitrov says he has not given up hope of winning a major in his career, despite his best years appearing to be behind him.

Dimitrov won the ATP Tour Finals in 2017 and finished the year at world number three. At that time he was expected to kick on and become a major challenger for the biggest titles.

It has just never happened for him though and, despite reaching the semi-finals at three Grand Slams, he has seen his ranking slide quite dramatically.

The Bulgarian is currently the world number 22, but he has dropped as low as 78 back in 2019.

However, asked if he can still win a Grand Slam title, Dimitrov said: “Yeah, of course I still believe that.

"I’ve had it on quite a few occasions. The past slams I’ve had good results. Now, unfortunately, I just have to play very, very good players early on second, third round.

“But I believe that there’s a lot more to come on my end. I think I can push through it and who knows when, what and where? But the only thing that I need to focus on is how I’m going to go on and about.”

Grigor Dimitrov is 31-years-old now and has not won a title since those ATP Finals in 2017.

He, though, says he knows hoe quickly things can change in tennis, and he hopes he sees the other side of that with a positive upturn.

“You just never know which week hopefully will turn things around for you," he said.

“And we know how volatile everything can be and how easily everything can change from one week to the other, from one point to the other.

"Obviously it’s kind of frustrating since, you know what you can do and you know you’ve done it, and it’s just a few small things here and there that are, that are not going through.

“But that’s also part of the game. I’ve been on tour for 13 years, so that also shows quite a bit of consistency.

"It’s definitely not an easy sport and sometimes it takes a bit of a different route.”
