Hubert Hurkacz says he produced some of his best ever tennis to beat Jannik Sinner to win a maiden Masters title in Miami.
The Polish ace took full advantage of an error-strewn Sinner performance to take a 7-6, 6-4 win and jump into the world’s top 16 on Sunday.
It was not just all about Sinner’s mistakes, though, with Hurkacz also producing some superb tennis, and he was understandably buzzing afterwards.
“I played some of the best tennis I ever played,” Hurkacz said.
“I was solid throughout the whole tournament, and I was able to get through each round, was even more pumped for the next round. So I think that’s something special for me.
“My tennis is getting better. We work hard with my coach (Craig Boynton), and super happy that it happened here.
“We still need to improve couple of things and just try to get better each day.”
Sinner was strongly fancied before the match to claim his first big title, and he is almost universally tipped to win multiple majors in the coming years.
Hurkacz, who has been a doubles partner of Sinner, knew all to well about what to expect going into the contest.
“Obviously I was trying to stay as solid as I can, because he can hit the balls so hard,” Hurkccz said. “If you let him do that, like, he’s just gonna run around.
“So I was just trying to keep his pace and be able to fight for each ball.”
