‘I don’t know why Nick Kyrgios acts the way he does,’ says Russian following Twitter spat

Karen Khachanov says he has ‘no problem’ with Nick Kyrgios, but he admits he can’t understand his behaviour at times.

The pair were involved in a trademark Kyrgios Twitter argument earlier this week, although Khachanov somehow appears to have been been caught by surprise by it.

“I don’t have any problem with Nick,” Khachanov told reporters at the French Open when asked about the spat.

“I always said that I respect him. I don’t know why he acts sometimes the way he acts.

“I wanted to be more polite just to explain also my opinion. But maybe just I want to let it go and that’s it.”

The argument erupted when Khachanov questioned the Australian’s comments about Mats Wilander, who he told to ‘shut up’ over comments made about Andy Murray.

It soon became a little more personal with Khachanov expressing his dismay at Kyrgios’ persistent swipes at other players this summer.

“You think what the players did during this pandemic was smart?’ Kyrgios asked Khachanov before calling him ‘an absolute pelican’.

“I’d love to have an intellectual conversation with you but I’m not sure it would go further than how hard you could hit a ball. I’ve simply been holding people accountable.”
