'I'm definitely not fit enough to play' - Dominic Thiem reveals new set-back

Dominic Thiem relieved

Dominic Thiem is facing a new set-back to his 2021 campaign - a knee injury, forcing him to withdraw from Belgrade.

Thiem was on a high at the end of 2020 after winning his first Grand Slam, the US Open, and attention was on the Austrian to see if he could challenge for other Major titles this year.

However, he took an unexpected early exit at the Australian Open, followed by even earlier exits in Doha and Dubai, in which he was top seed for both, and subsequently announced he was taking a short break to "re-set."

Thiem then withdrew from both Miami Masters and Monte-Carlo Masters while he revealed that he hadn't picked up a racquet or watched any tennis in order to get his 'hunger' for the sport back.

Now, after choosing not to defend his Barcelona title in favour of taking part in the Serbia Open, the world number four has now announced a new injury blow.

“2021 just doesn’t want to get going," said Thiem in blog post on his website.

"Unfortunately I will have to cancel my start at next week’s tournament in Novak Djokovic’s hometown Belgrade.

“My knee hurts and I went to see a doctor. It is not a big issue but I need to take care of it. I am definitely not fit enough to play next week.”

Thiem then went on to reveal that his coach Nicolas Massu has joined him in Austria and his main target is Roland Garros.

“I want to be completely fit at the beginning of May and play proper tennis,” says Thiem.

“There is something positive, though: Coach Nicolas Massu arrived in Austria yesterday, we are going to continue my program even though at the moment we have to be careful.

"In the meantime I have also been working on my physical fitness with sports scientist Mike Reinprecht."

“There is no doubt, the big goal till the summer are the French Open – in Paris I must be at my best.”
