'I'm doing it for me' - Victoria Azarenka hits back at fan over vaccination criticism

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka has hit back to a fan on social media who criticised her for getting her COVID vaccination.

The issue of vaccinations is a controversial one in tennis, with many top stars including Andrey Rublev and Elina Svitolina saying they do not want it.

Others, such as Dan Evans, have said they are fully in favour, and both the ATP and WTA have suggested they will offer incentives for players who take the jab.

This week, Azarenka joined the small list of players who have already received the vaccination, even pulling out of Stuttgart to ensure she was able to keep her appointment.

“I will unfortunately not be able to compete in Stuttgart at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix next week as I will be receiving my first dosis (sic) of the vaccine at the same time,” she said last week.

On Monday, she posted pictures on Twitter of her in the clinic after being vaccinated, and it didn't go down with one user who described it as an 'unlicensed cocktail of drugs.'

Azarenka, though, opted to hit back immediately, and defended her right to take the vaccine, just as those against it defend their right not to.

"Why are people have a problem with other people choice if doesn’t align with yours?" she asked.

"I didn’t tell no one to go do it. I said what I’m doing for me, for my knowledge and my belief on what is right."

Pat Cash, who the fan reference 'would not be happy' has also been a strong detractor of the vaccine, claiming it doesn't even work.
