'Jannik Sinner can be number one in the world,' says former champion

Jannik Sinner at Monte Carlo Masters

Jannik Sinner can reach the very top of tennis, says 2010 Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone, who believes a Grand Slam title is just a matter of time.

At just 19-years-old, Sinner already has two ATP Tour titles and recently reached the final of the Miami Open Masters, which has seen him break into the top 20 rankings for the first time.

The young Italian is widely considered one of the brightest prospects in the game along with fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti (19yrs) and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (17yrs) and Schiavone thinks he has what it takes to be the very best.

“He is a great guy,” Schiavone told Sky Sports. “I think a champion has to be an amazing person, then he loves this sport, and the third step is that he works a lot.

“He has a quality where he can see the ball faster than other players. He can be number one in the world."

Sinner's best Grand Slam finish so far has been reaching the quarter-final of the 2020 French Open in this debut at the tournament, and Schiavone believes that it's a matter of when, not if, he win claim a Major title.

“Absolutely, he can win a Grand Slam,” Schiavone continued. “I know that he will. It’s coming.”
