Former US Open champion Marin Cilic believes Lorenzo Musetti is currently ‘half a step’ ahead of Carlos Alcaraz in his tennis after playing them both.
Alcaraz and Musetti, along with Jannik Sinner, are widely regarded as the three most exciting young players on the ATP Tour right now, with all three starting to make their mark.
Sinner is already in the world top 20, with Musetti breaking into the top 100 this year. Alacaraz, meanwhile, is not much further back at 120 in the current rankings, although he is also a couple of years younger.
Cilic has played, and beaten both, this year, so he is well positioned to offer an analysis of where they are currently at in terms of their development, and he believes Musetti just shades it – for now.
“Lorenzo [Musetti] likes to play a little bit further away from the baseline, likes to open up the court, uses angles, has got really good touch,” Cilic said.
“He’s got also a one-hander, plays the slice and I think clay is his favourite surface.
“I feel he’s just maybe half a step in front of Carlos [Alcaraz]. Carlos is just getting on the tour and he has a bit of a different game.
“Carlos is playing more aggressive and also trying to attack, putting pressure on the opponent and I think both of those games that they have can improve a lot.”
