Matteo Berrettini says it is an 'extraordinary moment' for Italian tennis right now with so many promising young players emerging.

Berrettini has held onto his Italian number one spot this season but knows that it is only a matter of time before youngsters Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti start making their presence felt at the top of the ATP rankings.

It is a challenge that he can't ignore, but also one he is relishing.

“An extraordinary moment for Italian tennis," Berrettini said. "Of course I hope to be there. Or that there is still some Italian.

"Besides me and Fabio Fognini there is Sinner, there is Lorenzo Sonego who is playing very well. And there are many others who can give us joy over the next year.”

“Jannik is doing something impressive, he has an incredible maturity. At his age, I didn’t think about winning even a game, let alone a tournament. It is clear that he plays with a future idea."

Berrettini himself endured a frustrating year that did not really live up to the promise of 2019.

He still finished the season inside the top 10, although he failed to qualify for the a second successive ATP Finals.

He, though, has put that down to the unique challenges of 2020.

“I felt a lot of the fatigue of this 2020. I didn’t start the season in the best way, I often played half-injured. Then the fight against time to get back in shape, and when I was ready the virus arrived and they cancelled everything.”
