Matteo Berrettini: 'I don’t feel like I’m the Wimbledon favourite but I know I can do it'

'I don’t know if I’m the favourite as Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal are always there' - Life on the ATP Tour pretty much summed up...
Matteo Berrettini after winning Stuttgart

Matteo Berrettini admits he cannot consider himself the favourite to win Wimbledon with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the draw, but he is backing himself.

Berrettini is one of the few players around right now with a proven pedigree on grass, with him reaching the final last year only to be beaten by Djokovic.

The Italian has also won the last two editions of Queen's and beat Andy Murray in the Stuttgart final earlier this month to maintain his perfect record in that tournament too.

However, Novak Djokovic has won the last three Wimbledon titles and Rafael Nadal has taken both majors so far this season, so Berrettini knows that he heads to SW19 with everything to prove.

“I don’t know if I’m the favourite as Novak and Rafa are always there; Rafa has already won two Slams and no-one expected him to win in Australia," Berrettini said.

“I don’t feel like I’m the favourite but I know I can do it, I can’t pull the wool over people’s eyes. My aim is to have a big tournament at Wimbledon and I hope it will be two intense weeks.

“After a really good week in Stuttgart it would have been easy to not exactly take my foot off the gas but let my problems overwhelm me.

“Instead I found the right energy levels and to win such a prestigious tournament is really very special.”

Berrettini's record on grass certainly makes for impressive reading.

Four of his seven career titles have come on that surface, and he has only ever lost six of his 39 matches.

In fact, in the last three years, only two players have defeated Matteo Berrettini on grass, both at Wimbledon - Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
