‘I go to Miami with a lot of confidence,’ says world number three Simona Halep

Simona Halep has confirmed she will be playing at the Miami Open next week after taking a few weeks off through injury.

Halep reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open last month, before an impressive Serena Williams stopped her from going further, it later emerged she had a slight back injury.

After choosing to miss Doha and Dubai tournaments to recover, Halep says she’s returning to the Miami Open because she needs match practice.

The former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion has reached the semi-finals of the Miami tournament twice before, in 2015 and most recently in 2019, but never gone further, but says she is feeling confident.

“I’m going to Miami. I’m leaving next week,’ Halep told Digisport.

“I really want to be able to make some good matches, because I need official matches. I now had a month off again. I want to play well, I want to be careful about what I have to do on the field.

“It’s not easy on hard, especially in America, where many girls are already accommodated, they train there. I go there with a lot of confidence.”

Halep says her coach Darren Cahill has been a big influence in her decision to attend this year after choosing to skip last years event.

Cahill was instrumental in Halep winning the French Open in 2018 before announcing he was taking a break from coaching for family reasons. He re-joined the Romanian’s coaching team in 2020 and is clearly guiding Halep’s path through this season.

“Darren played an important role in making this decision. He really wanted to play in Miami because it’s a good tournament,”  said Simona Halep.
