‘I will never forget this dream week,’ says young tennis superstar after breakthrough tournament

Lorenzo Musetti has had a breakthrough week at the Mexican Open winning six games in a row to reach his first ever ATP 500 semi-final.

Musetti, currently ranked 120th, entered the tournament as a qualifier but won over the Acapulco crowd match by match with his unique and entertaining tennis style.

Along the way he defeated world number nine Diego Schwartzman and world number 16 Grigor Dimitrov, but was unable to get past Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final.

The promising youngster previously reached the 2018 US Open Boys final and became junior world number one after winning 2019 Australian Open boys title, but is now looking ready to make an impact on the men’s game.

“It was an incredible run and week for me,” said Musetti.

“Tonight, Stefanos was too good for me. I was really tired from the past six matches. I felt it in my legs and stomach, and I couldn’t breathe. I enjoyed the crowd and the emotion this week.

“I didn’t expect to reach the semi-finals. It was a dream week and I couldn’t believe what I did. Every day was different and a big emotion for me. I will never forget this week.”

The 19-year-old Italian proved how much tennis means to him six weeks ago when he got a tattoo of a heartbeat with a tennis racquet on his left arm.

“You can imagine how important tennis is in my life,” Musetti said. “I decided to tattoo this and I think it’s really cool and I really like it.”
