'I thought I'd wasted that stage of my career,' says Nick Kyrgios as he reaches first Grand Slam semi

A candid Nick Kyrgios has admitted that he thought he had 'wasted' his chances of reaching a Grand Slam semi-final in his career.
Nick Kyrgios into Wimbledon semi-final

Nick Kyrgios says he thought his chances of ever reaching a Grand Slam semi-final were behind him after he moved into the last four of Wimbledon.

Kyrgios is one of the most talented players in the world, although a lack of discipline has held his career back from challenging for Majors.

He returned to Wimbledon this year focused on starting to put that right, and said from the first day of the tournament that he considered himself a genuine contender to win it.

Few genuinely believed, but he beat Cristian Garin 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinal on Wednesday and he is grateful for a second chance in his career.

"An amazing atmosphere again. I never thought I'd be in the semi-final of a Grand Slam. I thought that ship had sailed - that I may have wasted that window in my career.

"Really happy I was able to come out here with my team and able to put on a performance.

"I felt I was playing on the back foot a lot. Garin's a hell of a player. Got lucky on a couple of break points so I'll take that and will prepare for my next match."

Last week, Nick Kyrgios said there was a time in his career when he had to be dragged out of night clubs at 4.30am by his agent the morning of a match.

Those days appears to be over for now, and he says he will fully focus on his preparation for the semi-final.

"There's a lot to be done," he said. "Go back, dad will cook us dinner as always. We'll eat it and just chill out."

The win over Garin was Kyrgios' third Grand Slam quarterfinal, but his first since 2015.
