‘No decisions yet’ – Ashleigh Barty hints her season may be over after Indian Wells withdrawal

Ashleigh Barty has hinted her 2022 season may be over after she withdrew from Indian Wells to return to Australia.

The world number one joined the likes of Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams this week in withdrawing from the Premier Mandatory event.

Strict quarantine rules in Australia have made it impossible for Barty, and other touring Australian players, to make quick trips home for breaks during the season.

Anyone entering the country must completely self-isolate in a hotel for two weeks upon arrival.

“Ash has withdrawn from Indian Wells to come home and see her family in Australia,” Barty’s manager Nikki Mathias said.

“She has been away from home since March and with the two week hotel quarantine requirement to come into Australia it has not been possible for her to return home before now.

“No further decisions have been made on events after Indian Wells yet.”

Barty is the defending champion at the WTA Finals, but it now looks unlikely that she will defend that title.

The event was cancelled in 2020, but will return in November this year in Guadalajara.

However, should Barty leave Australia again she would likely have to once again do a two-week quarantine before the Australian Open starts in January, although COVID protocol rules for the event have not yet been finalised.
