Rafael Nadal will win his 14th Roland Garros title this year says Barbara Schett, as nobody will beat him while playing in ‘basically his living room.’
Nadal has had unprecedented success at Roland Garros, winning an incredible 13 of the 16 times he has competed at the event.
No other player has enjoyed so much success at a single Grand Slam, the closest behind being Novak Djokovic with nine wins at the Australian Open and Roger Federer with eight wins at Wimbledon.
And although the Spaniard will turn 35 next week during the tournament and is seeded third behind world number one and two Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev, Nadal is still tipped as the clear bookies favourite to claim victory again.
Former top ten player and Eurosport analyst Barbara Schett says although every year they discuss whether someone else can win, it always comes back to the same conclusion.
“We have this discussion every year,” Schett told Eurosport.
“And every year I am thinking there is no way Nadal can back up this title once again and win it again.
“He is looking strong, obviously you cannot rule out a Novak Djokovic or a (Stefanos) Tstisipas who is playing extremely well at the moment.
“But then if you look at the facts and how many matches he has won, how many titles he has won at the French Open, and how he plays every year – it’s basically his living room.”
“You have to say, no, nobody is going to beat him,” Schett concluded.
