John McEnroe has described Australia’s handling of the Novak Djokovic visa situation as ‘total b***sh*t’.
Djokovic is unvaccinated, but travelled to Melbourne after being he told he had an exemption from the laws requiring anyone wishing to enter the country be inoculated against Covid-19.
The Australian government saw it differently, though, and eventually deported Djokovic after more than a week of legal wrangling.
The decision has split tennis, but McEnroe believes that the situation was entirely the fault of the Australian administration, not Djokovic himself.
“Listen I’ve been part of some chaotic scenes in Australia,” McEnroe ESPN.
“But what’s gone on the last 12 days tops everything. That is total and utter chaos.
“Absolute joke what’s gone on the last 12 days. I actually texted Novak during this. It’s total b***sh*t.”
“Look, if he decided not to have a vaccine, and the Australian authorities say to him “you cannot go down there, unless you’re vaccinated, end of story,” it’s black and white,” McEnroe explained.
“[From there] he decides whether or not he wants to do it. He’s got very strong beliefs, he’s entitled to those beliefs.”
Since the decision to remove him from the country, Djokovic has described himself as “extremely disappointed” but will not be making any further comment until after the Australian Open is finished.
