Novak Djokovic is ‘the best player in history on grass,’ says Daniil Medvedev

World number one Daniil Medvedev not only believes Novak Djokovic is the favourite to win Wimbledon, he says he is the greatest ever player on grass.

Generally speaking, Roger Federer and Pete Sampras tend to dominate the discussion about the best grasscourt players the men’s game has ever seen.

That is perhaps unfair on Novak Djokovic, though, with him now having won just one fewer titles at SW19 as Sampras, with Federer a further one ahead.

Djokovic has dominated in recent times, though, winning three in a row at Wimbledon and he has not lost on Centre Court for nine years now.

For Medvedev, that gives Djokovic as good a case as anyone to be considered the game’s greatest ever grasscourter.

Asked about his tips for Wimbledon, Medvedev said: “Novak is always the favourite.

“He has won the last three Wimbledons that have been played. He plays very well on grass.

“If we talk about the best players in history on grass, I would place him at the top, although I have not seen Borg or Sampras play.

“From my generation, Federer and Djokovic are the best. Of course, Nadal can win any tournament he plays in and [Matteo] Berrettini is playing at a high level.

Who, though, does Medvedev consider to the be the group of favourites for Wimbledon? The same three players as the rest of us, it seems.

“Speaking of favourites, Djokovic, Berrettini and Nadal.”

Author’s comment: We have been banging this drum for a while too, so we are not going to start disagreeing now.

It’s hard to say definitively who the best grass court player of all time is, especially if by your own admission you never saw Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg play.

Ultimately it is a subjective call without a ‘right’ answer, but Novak Djokovic definitely deserves to be in the discussion when to comes to history’s greatest grasscourt players without a shadow of a doubt.
