Dominic Thiem has reiterated how big an influence Novak Djokovic is having on his mentality in tiebreaks this year.
Thiem has become a genuine clutch player this year, winning the US Open final in a deciding tiebreak among other triumphs.
Last week he came back from 0-4 down to beat Djokovic himself in a deciding-set tiebreak, and he says he tries to channel the spirit of the Serbian in such situations.
“I took him as an example because he has won so many important tiebreaks in his career,” he said of Djokovic.
“I have the feeling that when he’s going into the tiebreaker, he just refuses to miss. That’s what I tried to do as well, especially from the restart of the tour.
“I tried to do that and it’s working out super well.”
Thiem says that he intends to emulate something else Djokovic excels at in 2021 – topping the ATP world rankings.
“It was still a very intense year, since the Tour returned [it] was super intense, so I haven’t set myself any goals yet for next year,” he said. “But of course I want to climb up the Rankings.
“I mean, this year and also [last] year has been amazing. I was playing great and had deep runs in many, many big tournaments. That’s what I want to do as well next year. If I’m able to do that, I think I will also get chances to climb the Rankings.”
