Current women’s world number three, Simona Halep has been giving her opinion on the big three of the men’s game Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Halep, a two-time Grand Slam winner, knows what it takes to play at the top of the game, having been ranked no lower than 4th place since 2014 and has the longest active streak of being a top ten player in the woman’s game.
After reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, Halep chose to sit out the Doha and Dubai tournaments to recover from a back injury but is ready to return in the Miami Open next week.
Talking to Digisport ahead of the tournament, Halep gave her opinions on what makes world number one Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who recently returned to tennis after 400 days away through injury, an inspiration to others.
“Djokovic is an example athlete. His strength to stay on the field, not to give up. Even if he has little pains, he calls the doctor and keeps playing” said Halep.
“The fact that Djokovic is still just as motivated should be appreciated.”
“I always admired Federer, he is a genius from my point of view.
“I think he will play for a while, it is clear that he does it with passion. I don’t know how much he will be able to physically, the wear and tear is felt after so many years. But if he says he will play at Wimbledon and the Olympics, so be it.
“Federer did not have so many injuries because of his gamestyle. Nadal has a greater game of wear and that is why he is more prone to injuries.”
The Miami Open starts on 22 March, both Federer and Nadal have withdrawn but at present Novak Djokovic is still expected to play.
