Novak Djokovic explains what makes world number one achievement 'even bigger'

Novak Djokovic with world number one trophy

Novak Djokovic says being world number one more than anyone else is an achievement that is amplified by the fact he has done it whilst Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have played.

No man has spent more time at world number one that Djokovic, who also holds the record for most year-end world number ones too.

He appears destined to lose his current spot at the top of the rankings this season regardless given he is being denied to defend the 2,000 points he won at Wimbledon last year.

The ATP has decided to strip the tournament of ranking points in response to them banning players from Russia and Belarus due to the crisis in Ukraine.

Djokovic, though, who was also denied the chance to defend his 2,000 at the Australian Open because of his vaccination status, says no one will ever be able to take away one of his proudest accomplishments.

“I have been blessed to be world number one so many weeks throughout my career," Djokovic told reporters at the French Open.

“That was always the highest goal at the beginning of every season.

“On the other hand, the downside of being world number one is that you are always being chased by everyone else.

“[They want] to dethrone you and want to win against you in every single match regardless of the size or category of the tournament.”

Novak Djokovic is currently one major behind Rafael Nadal in the Grand Slam race, but he can join the Spaniard on 21 should he win Roland Garros.

The pair will meet in the quarterfinals on Tuesday in what will be the 59th match of their storied rivalry.
