Goran Ivanisevic has described Novak Djokovic as a ‘genius perfectionist’ and says everything he does separates him from the rest.
Ivanisevic is a key part of Djokovic’s coaching staff, giving him a privileged vantage point from which to view the continued dominance of the world number one.
This year Djokovic won an 18th Grand Slam title in Australia and surpassed Roger Federer for the most weeks spent on top of the world rankings.
He can make even further history next month if he can win Roland Garros and become the first man to win every major multiple times, and Ivanisevic believes he is very well capable of that.
When asked by SportKlub what makes Djokovic special, Ivanisevic said: “It would take us three hours to talk about it. Everything separates him [from the rest].
“Although, I always believe that first our Balkan mentality is special, different, more resourceful, the best. I’m not just talking about Novak as a tennis player.
“But in general [too], in all sports and all branches outside of sports. That is why the West is afraid of us, we are good. Novak is special, a genius, a perfectionist.
“I’m not saying it’s always easy with him, but it’s one big challenge, trust, honour. He is a man who wants to be better and better every day.
“Today was good, tomorrow is not and must be better. You are pushing forward, a lot can be learned from him. It’s never boring.”
