‘Novak Djokovic is top favourite but never write off Federer,’ Dominic Thiem gives Wimbledon predictions

Dominic Thiem has been giving his predictions for Wimbledon and thinks although some players can be dangerous, Novak Djokovic is still the top favourite.

Thiem had been hoping to play Wimbledon for the first time since becoming a Grand Slam champion at the US Open.

The Austrian has had a difficult season since his maiden Slam title, suffering with some mental challenges as well as physical injuries which have disrupted his momentum and prevented him from building on last year’s achievements.

Hoping to gain match practice ahead of Wimbledon, Thiem played the Mallorca Championships and was 5-2 up in the first set, when he felt a crack in this wrist, requiring weeks of recovery and putting him out of the All England Championships.

Now, watching from afar, Thiem says although he wishes he was there himself, he’s tipping Djokovic to win the title, but Federer could still be a risk.

“Novak Djokovic is the absolute top favourite,” Thiem said.

“Sascha (Alexander Zverev), (Daniil) Medvedev and (Matteo) Berrettini can be dangerous.

“Never write off Federer. He’s such a legend, such a good player. I’m looking forward to the matches. I’d rather be there but it’s still interesting to watch from a distance.”

Thiem is hoping he can return in time to defend his US Open title in September but will face a tough challenge from Djokovic.

With the world number one winning the first two Grand Slams of the year and favourite for Wimbledon, he has admitted he is targeting all four majors this year and possibly even and Olympic Gold.

While Thiem can only watch from the sidelines, he is filling his days with sport.

“I watch a lot of Wimbledon and every match at the Euro,” said Thiem.

“I also want to use the time to start new projects with my new management. Of course also to spend lots of time with friends, family, in the nature, and do things for fun like attending F1.”
