Novak Djokovic out of the Australian Open as court dismisses visa appeal

Novak Djokovic will be unable to defend his Australian Open title after the Federal Court upheld the decision to cancel his visa.

Djokovic travelled to Australia under a medical exemption from the vaccination requirement, only to find himself detained at the border.

They then cancelled his visa, only for the world number one to successfully appeal on the grounds officials did not follow the correct procedure.

That allowed him to enter Australia and start his preparations for the first Grand Slam of the season.

However, the Australian government were not done with him and Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke used his executive power to cancel the visa again, claiming it was in the national interest.

That left Djokovic with few options, although he immediately issued a request to the Federal Court to review the legality of the Hawke’s decision.

And, after a hastily-arranged hearing on Sunday, a panel of three judges came down on the side of the State.

Chief Justice James Allsop said the verdict was unanimous, and Djokovic will now be deported from Australia.

Djokovic was due to play his first match in the tournament on Monday night, but he will now be replaced in the draw by lucky loser Salvatore Caruso.
