'It skyrocketed my confidence' - Novak Djokovic pinpoints moment he began to believe

Novak Djokovic celebrates ATP Cup

Novak Djokovic says it was the 2008 ATP Finals in Shanghai where he developed the confidence to believe he was a top player.

Djokovic will be remembered by many as the greatest player to ever pick up a racket, but as with all the other greats there was a moment when his mindset changed to believe he belonged in the elite.

For him, though, it wasn't one of of his 17 Grand Slam titles, but a moment at the ATP Finals.

“Next to the Slams, the [ATP] Finals is probably the biggest event that we have in our sport,” Djokovic said in an interview on

“It’s probably the ultimate challenge in a season, facing the Top 8 guys of the year.

"I have been fortunate to experience the Finals quite a few times in the last 10-15 years.

“Back in 2008 was my first win in Shanghai. That was the last year the World Tour Finals was held there and that was very special, obviously.

"That skyrocketed my confidence and allowed me to believe that I belong at the top of the men’s game with all these guys.”

Djokovic is one Tour Finals title away from equalling Roger Federer's record of six.
