‘What Novak Djokovic has accomplished is unthinkable – he has raised the level,’ says Stefanos Tsitsipas

Self-confessed Roger Federer fan Stefanos Tsitsipas says Novak Djokovic has done ‘unthinkable things’ in raising the level of tennis.

Watch any Stefanos Tsitsipas match and you can see Federer’s influence stamped all over his game.

But, while he is happy to name Federer as his idol, he also can’t help but be awe-struck by what Djokovic has achieved in recent years.

“It’s unbelievable,” Tsitsipas told the press in Rotterdam, where he won his opening match on Tuesday.

“Federer in my eyes has done incredible things in tennis. Not that Djokovic hasn’t done it, but for me, Federer has always been an idol I grew up with.

“The things Djokovic has accomplished later, though – the last 7-8 years – are unthinkable.

“It has raised its level so much, every year it seems to get better. All I can say is a big thumbs up.”

Tsitsipas is part of a talented younger generation of players who are vying for the big three’s spots at the top, and he says no one should assume they can’t emulate the modern greats.

“I think the new generation could do something similar,” he said.

“I do not think anyone 15 years ago expected Federer to surpass the Sampras record. It is difficult to predict what will happen.

“We as a new generation have many players that they can offer in tennis.”
