'I think Novak Djokovic will overtake Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer,' says analyst

Rafael Nadal Roger Federer Novak Djokovic atp big three tennis goat debate

Novak Djokovic will win more majors than Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, but all of the big three should be remembered as greats of the era, says Barbara Schett.

The debate over which of the Big Three will win the Grand Slam race, and ultimately be declared Greatest of all Time (GOAT), has been rumbling on for many years.

Just last year Rafael Nadal equaled Roger Federer's record of winning 20 Grand Slam singles titles in the men's game but Novak Djokovic is only two behind on 18 after winning this year's Australian Open.

Now with Federer struggling to find his form after returning from knee-surgery, and due to turn 40 this year, it is thought that he has limited chances of increasing his majors haul.

Meanwhile, with Nadal favourite to win his 14th Roland Garros title and Djokovic still sitting as world number one, there are signs that their rivalry could continue for a while to come.

"I think this battle to see who wins the most majors will come down to Novak and Rafa,” said the former world number seven Schett.

“One part of deciding who is the greatest of these three will be, in the end, the Grand Slam titles they win. I guess that is how they will be judged. They have all played at the same time and at the end of the day, the numbers count.

“Both Novak and Rafa seem fine physically and for me, I think Djokovic will overtake Nadal and Federer at the end.”

Regardless of who wins the Grand Slam race, Schett believes all three have created a legacy that will never be rivalled within tennis.

“We have to pay tribute to all three,” said Schett.

“This era, the three of them, it is unbelievable what they have done for the game. We will never experience anything like this again.

“If they win 21, 22 or 23, it doesn’t matter. It’s outstanding from all three of them. They will always been remembered as the greats of this era, which is just phenomenal.”
