‘If Rafael Nadal plays I will be happy with life,’ says Madrid Masters chief

Feliciano Lopez says he will be ‘happy with life’ if Rafael Nadal plays the Madrid Masters next year, but he wants Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic too.

The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis, but in 2019 all of the ‘big three’ played.

That has become something of a rarity in modern tennis, particularly for clay events with Federer opting to skip the red dirt season more often than not in recent years.

Nadal, though, can certainly be relied upon to play Madrid, and Lopez believes that alone can make it a special event.

“Last year there were Rafa, Federer and Djokovic and it was spectacular,” Lopez said.

“Having all three of them is a dream for any tournament. Not even the Grand Slams have had them in recent years.

“We having Rafa every year gives the tournament a special dimension. Let’s not forget the player we have.

“I don’t know about Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer’s plans. I do know Rafa’s a bit because for him the clay season is very important.

“He is giving more importance to it in recent years, perhaps because he is getting older, because he selects the tournaments better.

“As director of the Mutua Madrid Open, if Rafael Nadal comes I will be happy with life.”
