Rafael Nadal is crazy but incredible, says Diego Schwartzman as he found perhaps the most concisely accurate description of the Spaniard imaginable.
Nadal beat Novak Djokovic earlier this month to win his 13th Roland Garros and draw level with Roger Federer with 20 career Grand Slams.
Both are now three ahead of Novak Djokovic in the race for that particular slice of history, and Schwartzman has hailed Nadal for his achievements.
“Everything Rafael Nadal does is crazy… I’ve told him,” Schwartzman said.
“He continues to break records, both on clay and at the Grand Slam level.
“Now he’s there fighting Roger Federer head to head (for the Slams) and Novak Djokovic a little further back, the three of them are fighting to be the best in history and it’s incredible what Nadal keeps doing.”
Schwartzman recently travelled to Mallorca to train at Nadal’s academy and was also invited for some downtime on the Spaniard’s yacht.
He is having a stellar season himself – beating Nadal on clay in Rome before losing to him in the French Open semi-final.
Schwartzman has also achieved a career-high ranking of number eight in the world and looks likely to make his ATP Finals debut next month.
“These last few weeks were a very good level, with a lot of new things, defeating the best clay court players which are there today,” he explained.
“I think that in the end I ended getting the confidence to enter the top ten.
“Being part of the top ten is an important achievement after many years of being close and it is very nice to be able to achieve it.
On his trip to visit Nadal’s academy, he added: “I feel very comfortable in Mallorca. I love the Rafa Nadal Academy, I have already been several times.
“I like the city too and it is an important part of being able to enjoy after coming and training, to relax.”
