‘Rafael Nadal is one of the best players in history, but the pressure will be on him,’ says Andrey Rublev

Andrey Rublev says the pressure will all be on Rafael Nadal when they meet on Sunday night at the ATP Finals.

Rublev is playing his first ever match in the competition, and he couldn’t have got a more prestigious draw than to be facing 20-time Grand Slam winner Nadal first up.

But, despite giving Nadal his due, Rublev says he essentially has a free swing at the Spaniard, given how big an underdog he will be.

“Rafa is one of the best players in history; the pressure will be on him,” Rublev told the press.

“All the matches are challenging, with the best players competing in London. I’m looking forward to the tournament.”

While Rublev is giving Nadal the respect he deserves, it is hard to imagine the Russian fearing playing anyone right now.

Nobody has won more titles on the ATP Tour than him this season, and he has arrived in London in the form of his life – and it’s something Nadal is certainly aware of.

“I don’t know how close I was to a perfect preparation,” admitted Nadal.

“The four matches in Bercy should help and I have two more days to prepare for a tough opening match against Rublev.”
