‘Amazing’ Roger Federer is capable of winning Wimbledon this year, says Marseille chief

Marseille tournament director Jean-Francois Caujolle says Roger Federer is ‘so good for tennis’ after backing him to win Wimbledon.

Federer made his comeback to the ATP Tour after more than 400 days out battling injury last week in Doha.

That comeback lasted just two matches, as he beat Dan Evans before losing out to eventual winner Nikoloz Basilashvili.

However, his return did create an understandable buzz in the tennis world, and Caujolle believes Federer still has another major left in him.

When asked if he thought Federer could win Wimbledon this year, he said: “Why not? He is just amazing.

“He is as excited now as when he was at 17-years-old so he can win on grass if he is totally fit.”

“I also thought he could have beaten Nikoloz Basilashvili in Doha and gone far. He is so good for tennis.”

Federer considered playing Dubai following his Doha exit, but he has instead opted to return home for a ‘training block’ to assess how his knee dealt with playing again.

He has also pulled out of the Miami Open, meaning we won’t be seeing him again until the clay season starts next month.
