Toni Nadal: ‘It is the dream of all coaches to work with Roger Federer’

Toni Nadal says it would be a ‘dream’ for any coach to work with Roger Federer, adding the Swiss may be the best player in history.

The Spaniard was the driving force behind Rafael Nadal for most of his career, with that involving many iconic battles against Federer.

However, despite that rivalry with Rafa, Toni believes no one would ever turn down the chance to work with Federer, including him.

Asked by Marca what his reaction would be if Roger Federer asked for his coaching help, Toni Nadal said: “He would never come to me!

“He’s so good that he doesn’t need help. But one thing is clear: it would be a dream come true for all coaches to coach Roger Federer one day.

“He is one of the best tennis players in history, if not the best. But I’m sure he doesn’t need my help.”

Toni Nadal has, of course, recently returned to full-time coaching on the ATP Tour with Felix Auger-Aliassime, but he says it was never his plan to coach anyone but Rafa.

“I never thought of training another player,” he said. “The situation with Rafa was special.

“I have been training him since he was 3 or 4 years old. He was always my nephew in the first place.

“That also had its advantages: I knew him and knew what is good for him and how much I can expect him to do.

“It is not so natural with another player, but I am lucky to work with an athlete like Felix. He has great potential.”
