‘Roger Federer is still the greatest of all time,’ says Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni

Roger Federer should still be regarded as the greatest of all time right now, says Toni Nadal, despite nephew Rafa equalling his Grand Slam count.

Rafael Nadal won a 13th Roland Garros crown this month to draw level with his Swiss rival on 20 major titles.

Many believe Grand Slam count to be the ultimate measure of greatness in tennis, and that has seen some – understandably – happy to suggest that if Nadal has not already surpassed Federer, it is only a matter of time until he does.

Toni Nadal, though, the Spaniard’s uncle and former coach, says Rafa has not yet done enough.

“For me the best continues to be Roger Federer,” Toni Nadal said.

“He has more tournaments won, has more overall victories and more weeks at the top of the rankings – all of this counts.”

After Nadal’s most recent French Open win, Toni said that Novak Djokovic would ultimately fall short no matter what records he wins, because of a more intangible factor than sheer numbers.

“Statistics aside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have elevated this sport to a higher category, something that others can hardly do.

“It seems right to me that both are considered the two best players in tennis history.”
