Miami Open suffers another blow as Serena Williams withdraws due to ‘oral surgery’

The Miami Open has lost another major name after Serena Williams announced she was pulling out due to recent dental surgery.

The tournament has been plagued by a spate of big-name withdrawals in the last week or so for varying reasons.

Roger Federer was the first to reveal he would not be traveling, saying he needed to do a ‘training block’ following his recent comeback from injury instead.

Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem were next, with both citing a desire to concentrate on their clay court preparations as the reason behind their decisions.

Novak Djokovic also withdrew to spend some time with his family, but losing Serena, who is local to the event, may be the biggest blow yet.

“I’m disappointed to withdraw from the Miami Open because of recent oral surgery,” Serena said.

“Miami is a special tournament for me because it’s my home.

“I am sad I won’t be able to see the incredible fans this year, but I look forward to coming back soon.”

Italian world number ten Matteo Berrettini has also withdrawn, but due to the abdominal injury that he suffered at the Australian Open last month.
