Simona Halep: 'I told my family and friends that I was done with tennis'

Simona Halep says she 'was done with tennis' earlier this year, explaining she felt she had lost her desire.

Halep is a two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, although since winning Wimbledon in 2019 she has suffered something of a slide.

She heads back to Wimbledon this year for the first time since winning the title and feeling in reflective mood over the mental challenges she has faced in the intervening three years.

“I played well in Australia [this year], but then after I lost in Doha, I was down again," Halep told The Guardian.

"I actually told my family and my close ones that I probably am done with tennis because I felt like I have no more power to fight and to stay there to be resilient."

Simona Halep seemed to lose her way when the Covid-19 restrictions in Australia essentially stripped her of her coach Darren Cahill.

However, this year she has started working with Patrick Mouratoglou, who previously coached Serena Williams, and it seems to have helped her refocus.

"So now that I met Patrick [it] made it a little bit easier. And now I’m really motivated. And I have that desire to keep playing because I feel I can and I feel that I still love it.”

As for her future, Halep says she is not putting too much pressure on herself by setting a timeframe.

“The pandemic came and everything changed,” she says. “So now I’m just trying to rebuild everything I had before and even stronger if it’s possible.

"But I take it slow, I take it easy, and just give myself time.”
