‘Stop waiting for big three to retire and beat them,’ David Nalbandian tells top ATP youngsters

The top young players have been told to stop waiting for Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic to retire and start beating them now by David Nalbandian.

Nalbandian is the only player to ever beat all three of the tennis’ titanic trio in the same tournament, which he did at the Madrid Masters 13 years ago.

The Next Gen failed again at the Australian Open, when both Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev had chances to stop Djokovic from winning another major, and Nalbandian thinks much of the problem is mental.

“Good players can beat them,” Nalbandian told atptour.com.

“It is not impossible work. Sometimes it’s good for new players to start believing in themselves.

“They’re incredible players, but they’re not superheroes. The new generation has to start believing in themselves.”

“Most of the players think that they’re waiting for the Big Three to retire. “I say, let’s stop waiting and beat them.”

Only Andy Murray and Dominic Thiem have managed to win five matches against three of Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic, which highlights just how big a barrier they have erected for younger players.

“It’s incredible the way that they adapt to the new players and their age, because they’re getting older,” Nalbandian said.

“They’re still on, they’re still focused, they’re still inspired to keep going. That’s amazing.

“That’s why there are only three players who can do that. It’s Roger, Rafa and Nole. The others can’t do that. Nobody.”
