WATCH: ‘You’re all corrupt’ – Denis Shapovalov rages at umpire for not punishing Rafael Nadal

Denis Shapovalov courted controversy at the Australian Open by openly claiming the umpires are ‘all corrupt’ in his quarterfinal clash with Rafael Nadal.

Nadal had just won the first set and Shapovalov was due to serve to open the second.

The Canadian was at the baseline ready but Nadal was still not in position to receive.

By the time Nadal was ready, Shapovalov had grown irate and approached the chair to complain and demand a code violation be issued to the Spaniard.

“You’re looking at the clock so long ago and he’s still not ready to play,” Shapovalov told Carlos Bernardes.

“You’ve got to code him.”

The umpire did not code him, and instead asserted that when Nadal was ready to play, Shapovalov delayed the game by ‘talking to me.’

Shapovalov was relentless in his protests, though, telling he umpire: “Are you kidding me? You guys are all corrupt, you guys are all corrupt,” as he walked away.

The match finished in 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 in Nadal’s favour after a spirited fightback from the Canadian.

Shapovalov has now lost all three of his Grand Slam quarterfinals, with this defeat added to losses to Pablo Carreno Busta at the 2020 US Open and Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year.

Nadal, meanwhile, will contest his 36th Grand Slam semi-final this week as he chases a record 21st major.
