‘Without him, I would never have been able to win’ – Rafael Nadal pays tribute to doctor

Rafael Nadal says he would not have been able to win as much as he has without the unsung efforts of his personal doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro.

No man has won more Grand Slam singles titles than Nadal, whose on-court intensity may be unmatched in any sport, not just tennis.

That intensity has taken its toll on Nadal’s body over the years, though, with him fighting injury for most of his career and requiring to manage his schedule and fitness meticulously to remain at the top.

And, when speaking to one of his main sponsors, Nadal was keen to pay tribute to Dr Cotorro and express his gratitude.

“With Angel we had a lot of difficult times because at the end of the day he is the doctor,” Nadal said.

“And when I’m with the doctor, it’s because things are going wrong.”

“But Angel is a very positive person, and that is an important virtue in the medical world.

“He projects himself and looks forward optimistically. He helped me find solutions.

“Without him, I would never have been able to win some tournaments. Without a trusted doctor, my results would have been totally different. I can only thank him.”
