‘You guys are a zoo’ – Nick Kyrgios dazzles on court setting up Daniil Medvedev showdown

Nick Kyrgios once again brought his own unique style to the Australian Open, whipping the crowd on John Cain Arena into a frenzy as he stormed into the second round.

Kyrgios is already well-known for his unorthodox activities on court, and he didn’t disappoint the crowd who cheered on his underarm serves and ‘tweeners’ including one impressive tweener serve.

His opponent Brit Liam Brody, ranked 127th in the world, couldn’t compete with an in-form Kyrgios who always seems to raise his game in front of his home-crowd, winning in three straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

After the match, Kyrgios who tested positive for COVID-19 recently and was a doubt for the tournament, said he was delighted to be back.

“I am super happy to be here again,” said Kyrgios in his on-court interview.

“I know we have all had a tough couple of years so to be back at the Australian Open again it’s so much fun.

“When I tested positive it obviously wasn’t great news, a week out from the Australian Open, I had some doubts, a lot of messages asking me if I was going to play, but I couldn’t ask for a better team.”

Kyrgios played tribute to the loud support he received from the crowd, and after the match he stayed to take selfies and even sipped beer that was offered to him from a fan.

“I don’t know what I have done to this crowd because you guys are a zoo, out of control. I am so excited to be here, this is my favourite court in the entire world.”

The Australian will now face world number two Danill Medvedev in the next round. The Russian reached the final of last years Australian Open, and is the reigning US Open Champion.

Despite their difference in rank, (Kyrgios is ranked 115th), the Australian has beaten Medvedev in both of their head to head games so far, both in 2019 so it promises to be a good match.

“He is an amazing player,” Kyrgios said about Medvedev.

“I knew he was going to do some special things in this sport and he’s won a Grand Slam. I am not even thinking about that, I’ve got some doubles tomorrow with Thanasi and it’s great to see him back with the success he has been having.

“I am not even looking ahead, I know I will have to play some great tennis, but I’m going to enjoy tonight, I’ve got a great day tomorrow and then we will see what happens.”
