‘You guys touched my soul’ – Tearful Novak Djokovic thanks US Open crowd

Novak Djokovic thanked the New York crowd for ‘touching his soul’ after he lost the US Open final to Daniil Medvedev.

Djokovic has not always had an easy relationship with crowds in his career, but as his historic attempt to win a calendar Grand Slam slipped away, the crowd rallied in support of the Serbian.

At the changeover before the final game, Djokovic was visibly touched by it as he sat weeping in his chair into his towel.

And, after the match, he made sure he reciprocated the love he received from the crowd.

“I was thinking in both scenarios, visualising myself standing here in front of you guys and what would I say,” Novak Djokovic said.

“I would like to say that tonight, even though I have not won the match, my heart is filled with joy and I am the happiest man alive because you guys made me feel very special on the court.

“You guys touched my soul. I have never felt like this is New York. I love you guys.

“Thank you so much for your support and everything you have done tonight for me. I love you and I will see you soon. Thank you.”
